There are lots of advantages to traveling after you've retired. You can come and go as you please. You’re not tied to a limited number of vacation days. The stress of returning home is greatly reduced because you don't have to go back to work! Here are some tips that can help make your retirement travel safe and memorable.
If you prefer to travel on your own, you should do some homework
If you love to travel-and have plenty of time-chances are you'll want stay awhile once you reach your destination. You'll want to steep yourself in the culture, practice the language, visit diverse areas, and more.
It can be a good idea to learn as much as you can before you leave. Travel books, online guides, and online reviews can help you decide which parts of a country to visit, where to eat, when to go, and much more. If you want to learn more than the guidebooks will tell you, it can be a good idea to hire a local guide for a day. Your hotel can probably provide a recommendation.
You can join a tour led by experts
Of course, you don't have to go it alone. There are hundreds of professional travel services and organizations that can help you plan a trip or provide a pre-planned one.
- Elderhostel, for example, is a non-profit organization that tries to create unique travel and learning experiences for people over age 55. These professionally guided adventures can take you from the Arctic to Israel to Japan for bird watching, pottery making, and a variety of other fun activities.

Check with your local colleges, zoos and museums. Many offer tours and cruises to interesting parts of the world. These trips often are led by historians, anthropologists, and other experts in specific fields. You could enjoy a river cruise through Russia led by scholar who specializes in the Russian Czars, or hike along the Lewis and Clark Trail with an American historian or botanist. There are countless combinations; you just need to do some research to find a trip that piques your interest.
